Microscopic events create macroscopic organs, and maladaptations in these microscopic events can manifest as macroscopic disease. 3D cell culture is a powerful tool for investigating how spatial relationships and environmental conditions dictate cellular function. In this Technique Talk, Benjamin Freedman will discuss how his laboratory uses human induced-pluripotent stem cell-derived organoids, in concert with other techniques, to explore the kidney for the advancement of tissue regeneration, gene therapy, and drug development.
Learning Objectives
- Organoids as drug development tools for kidney disease
- Organoid engraftment in mice
- Limitations of organoids
- Future directions for organoid research
