Since 2011, the Nikon Small World in Motion competition has blended the science of microscopy and the art of photography to show how dynamic the world is when we take a closer look. The first-place winner for 2022 is Eduardo Zattara from Argentina’s National Scientific and Technical Research Council. Using a combination of bright field and confocal microscopy along with fluorescent markers, Zattara was able to capture how lateral line cells (green) and melanocytes (orange) travel within a zebrafish embryo.
Lisa Winter became social media editor for The Scientist in 2017. In addition to her duties on social media platforms, she also pens obituaries for the website. She graduated from Arizona State University, where she studied genetics, cell, and developmental biology.
